Unity of knowledge & practice
Without the traffic jam and the escort of their parents, elementary school students in Tokyo start their day by walking to school on their own or in pairs. From the first grade of elementary school, Japanese children take their first steps toward "self-reliance" by going to school on their own. In some schools, senior children take turns picking up their junior classmates to foster a sense of responsibility and teamwork.

Habit formation in the details
What kind of power lies behind Japanese culture? In his anthropological book The Sword and the Chrysanthemum, the American cultural anthropologist Ruth Benedict uses the gentleness of the chrysanthemum flower and the biting cold of the sword as a pen to analyse the Japanese culture's emphasis on filial piety, etiquette and self-control, as well as its emphasis on the formation of habits in children's education, and so forth, so as to analyse the behavioural patterns and values of the Japanese people.
The Sword and the Chrysanthemum makes special mention of the fact that prudence, honour and responsibility are gradually imposed on Japanese children in primary school and maintained with the strictest discipline until the child forms a habit. For example, by learning the brush, the child exercises concentration, self-control and control. In their opinion, once these habits are formed, they will benefit the child for the rest of his life. From these Japanese methods of educating and training children, there may be some inspiration for our education.
The first stop on our visit was Seibu Gakuen Bunri Elementary School in Saitama Prefecture, which is about a 40-minute drive from the center of Tokyo. The details of education are reflected everywhere in Seibu Gakuen Bunri: class-based umbrella storage racks, neatly arranged shoe racks, large writing compartments specially designed for the younger grades, and students' classroom assignments or artwork that can be seen everywhere in the hallway, etc., all of which show the guidance of the daily school order and the student-centered considerations.

The delegation was particularly amazed by the fact that the Comrades' Society High School has turned the school into a museum. It was explained that in the face of accelerated globalisation and great changes in society, the study is pioneering a new era of learning based on traditional education. In their view, students will want to learn as long as they are in that space, so the school has a maths museum, a biology museum, a physics museum, a geography museum and so on. In the Maths Museum, one can experience various tools of mathematics, such as various theorems and mathematical art. In the Biology Museum, there is a collection of 8,000 specimens of hippopotamus and crocodile. In addition to the specimens and teaching materials, there is also a rich media space for students to learn right in the middle of it.

Waseda University
A university without walls
Waseda University is a private comprehensive research university located in Shinjuku, Tokyo, Japan, founded in 1882 by former Japanese Prime Minister Shigenobu Ohmi, and enjoys a high reputation internationally. Waseda University is founded on the principles of ‘independence of learning’, ‘application of learning’ and ‘creation of exemplary citizens’.
Waseda University, as a leading institution with a long history and world-wide reputation, has not only made outstanding achievements in academic research, but also played an important role in human resources training and cultural exchange. Numerous outstanding politicians, entrepreneurs, scholars and social activists have been trained here and have made important contributions to the development of the world.
The delegation also has a strong connection with Waseda University. One of the veteran presidents of the delegation, President Yu Zhongwen, is a leading figure in vocational education in China. President Yu Zhongwen went to Waseda University in 1988-1989 for an academic visit. At that time, President Yu was deeply impressed by the gap between China's higher education and developed countries, especially, China's higher education did not focus on classified training. The experience in Japan gave him a first-hand feeling of modernisation, which was a great inspiration for his subsequent founding of the Shenzhen University of Vocational Technology (SZUVT).
Friendship crosses the ocean, and China and Japan are linked by the heart. Mr Han Liqing, the leader of the delegation, also mentioned in his speech that the new Prime Minister of Japan, Mr Ishiba Shigeru, advocated to build a ‘constructive and stable’ Japan-China relationship with China, to comprehensively promote the strategic and reciprocal relationship with China, and to maintain communication at all levels. Education is an important area of civil exchange, and the Lingnan Tongman Unity of knowledge & practice delegation is likely to be the first Chinese delegation to Japan since the new Prime Minister came to power, so this visit is of great historical significance. Mr. Han Liqing mentioned that in the future, Lingnan Tongman will have more cooperation with Japanese schools, which will not only help to pass on the friendship between the two peoples, but also provide useful civic support for the dialogue between the two governments.
